We keep kosher, so if we wanted ice cream for dessert we'd have to wait the requisite 6 hours after finishing our lamb or veal chops to be able to eat dairy. A little snack of pickled herring and rye bread at 10 a.m.? Why not? But it was the late nights that I dream about sometimes. Want homemade potato knishes for breakfast? Done. In the grand tradition of Bubbies she'd shamelessly indulge me for a couple of days, and it was heavenly. Going to her house for a sleepover was the most wonderful experience. She was a Holocaust survivor and just the most loving, generous, gorgeous Bubby in the world. My favorite memories from childhood involve sitting at my grandmother's table late at night eating cherry vanilla from Carvel. My two “cousins” John and Troy were the sons of my mom’s college roommate. Skee-ball, batting cages, go-karts, arcade games, and soft-serve ice cream. Starland is where we went in the summertime. Since that time, there have been Häagen-Dazs and Talenti, Ben & Jerry's and gelatos, but nothing has quite trumped the memory of that Dusty Road. When I dug in, the first sensation was the powdery malt sticking to the roof of my mouth followed by an explosion of cold ice cream, hot caramel, and creamy marshmallow blending together to create an astonishing mixture of textures temperatures and tastes. It started with coffee ice cream covered in warm caramel sauce, layered with creamy marshmallow and topped with a coating of malted milk. On special occasions, I'd get to sit at the counter, legs dangling from the stool, and have a Dusty Road, the ice cream sundae I still remember half a century later. Bartel made his own ice cream and chocolates. was old-fashioned even in the 1950s, with mirrored walls, polished marble counter and stools that let you spin in endless circles or at least until your mother made you sit still.
